All about linking Aadhaar with PAN
Every individual who has been allotted Permanent Account Number (PAN) has to mandatorily link it with his/her Aadhaar. The last date to link your Aadhaar and PAN is 31st March 2023, with a fee of ₹ 1,000 (Rupees one thousand only).
Let’s quickly understand the important points related
to this.
This will have a number of adverse implications such as:
(a) You shall not be
able to file Income Tax Return using the inoperative PAN
(b) Pending returns
will not be processed
(c) You will not get
your pending Income Tax Refund
(d) TDS will be
required to be deducted at a higher rate as PAN becomes inoperative
(e) You will face
problems while dealing with banks. You may not be able to operate your bank
accounts smoothly. You may not be able to invest in Fixed Deposits with banks.
(f) Your demat account
will be freezed. You will not be able to sell and purchase the shares.
(g) Your will not be
able to invest in mutual funds. Your SIP instalments will be stopped debiting
from your bank account.
(h) You may also not get benefits of any government scheme where quoting PAN is mandatory.
You will have to pay a penalty of ₹ 10,000 (Rupees ten thousand only) to link your Aadhaar and PAN after 31st March 2023.
2. For whom is Aadhaar - PAN linkage not compulsory?
Aadhaar - PAN linkage is not compulsory for any individual who is:
(a) Residing in the
States of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya
(b) a non-resident as
per the Income Tax Act, 1961
(c) of the age of
eighty years or more (super senior citizens) at any time during the previous
year
(d) not a citizen of India
3. How to check whether your Aadhaar is linked to PAN or not?
It is very simple to check Aadhaar–PAN linkage status. Go to the link https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/link-aadhaar-status, enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click on the tab ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.
If your Aadhaar is already linked to PAN, the following message appears:
‘Your PAN XXXXXXXXXX is already
linked to given Aadhaar XXXXXXXXXXXX’
If your Aadhaar is not linked to PAN, the following message appears:
‘PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on Link aadhaar link to link your Aadhaar with PAN.’
4. What to do if your Aadhaar is not linked to PAN?
If your Aadhaar is not linked to PAN, you have to link it now by clicking the link https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/bl-link-aadhaar. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click on the tab ‘Validate’. You will be navigated to the screen for making the payment of fees of ₹ 1,000. Here, read all the instructions carefully, select your bank and pay the challan online. After two-three working days, visit again this link to check the status of the challan. When the details of the challan paid by you are reflected here, you can proceed further to link your Aadhaar and PAN. After successful submission of Aadhaar - PAN linkage request, you can check the status of the request by clicking on the link mentioned in the point no. (3) above. You may take help of your tax consultants for this process, as you may find it slightly technical.
5. What if your Aadhaar is not linked with PAN even after following the steps mentioned above?
The possible reasons for failure of Aadhaar – PAN linking is mismatch in name/date of birth/gender in Aadhaar and PAN. Then you have to correct your details with database of Aadhaar or PAN, as the case may be.
6. Please note that if anyone is not liable to file Income Tax Return or not involved in any financial transactions, then also PAN - Aadhaar linkage is mandatory. Anyone having PAN and eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number has to link Aadhaa with PAN. Even Minor having PAN and Aadhhar has to link them compulsory.
